Bowling Shoe Sizing & Fit Guide

Bowling shoes generally fit true to your athletic shoe size, but small differences exist between brands. This guide will help you choose the right size the first time and explain when to size up or down.

📏 General Sizing Guidelines

How Bowling Shoes Should Fit

  • Heel: snug, no slippage when you walk
  • Midfoot: comfortable, not tight or pinching
  • Toes: ¼" to ½" of space at the front (about a thumbnail width)
  • Width: no pressure on the sides; foot should sit naturally without spilling over

Sizing Up or Down

Situation Recommendation
You're between sizes Size up — bowling shoes break in slightly looser
You have wide feet Look for "Wide" (W) versions, or size up ½ size
You bowl with thicker socks Add ½ size
High arches or orthotics Size up ½ size to accommodate inserts

👞 What Each Brand Offers

There is no reliable "this brand runs big" rule. Fit complaints reach us in both directions on every brand in roughly equal numbers, and they vary model to model within a brand, so measure your foot and compare it to the size chart on the product page rather than guessing from a reputation.

What does differ between brands is what they make, and that is worth knowing before you fall in love with a shoe:

  • Dexter carries the deepest range, roughly a youth 1 through a men's 16, and has by far the most models offered in a Wide.
  • KR Strikeforce and Brunswick also run from youth sizes to a 15, with a Wide on a handful of models rather than most of them.
  • 3G and 900 Global start around a 4 and run to a 15, with Wide on a few models.
  • Hammer runs about a 6 to a 14.
  • Epic and BSI do not currently offer a Wide in any model, so if you need width, look at the brands above.

Half Sizes

Half sizes are normal up to 11.5 and get scarce above it. If you wear a 12.5 or larger and need a half size, call us before ordering: 1-256-579-1039. We can tell you which models exist in your size instead of you finding out by exchange.

♂️♀️ Men's vs. Women's Sizing

Converting Between Men's and Women's Sizes

If a model is only available in one gender's sizing:

  • Women's to Men's: subtract 1.5 from the women's size (e.g., women's 9 = men's 7.5)
  • Men's to Women's: add 1.5 to the men's size (e.g., men's 8 = women's 9.5)

Unisex / Universal Models

Many entry-level "athletic" bowling shoes (e.g., Dexter Pro Am II, Brunswick Path) are sold in unisex sizing using men's measurements. Women should subtract 1.5 from their normal women's size to find the correct unisex size.

📐 Wide and Narrow Widths

Wide

  • Wide is a real option on our site, but only on a minority of models. Use the Width filter on any shoe category page to see them.
  • Dexter offers the most Wide models by a wide margin; KR Strikeforce and Brunswick offer a few; Epic and BSI currently offer none.
  • If the standard width feels tight across the forefoot, a Wide in your usual size is a better answer than a longer shoe. Going up a full size to buy width leaves your foot sliding forward, which is exactly what you do not want on the slide step.

Narrow Feet

  • Most bowling shoes are built on a medium last.
  • If the standard width is loose, lace tighter or add a thicker insole before sizing down, since a short shoe hurts more than a slightly roomy one.

🧒 Kids & Youth Bowling Shoes

Sizing for Growing Feet

  • For league bowlers, size up ½ size from current shoe size to allow for growth
  • For occasional/casual bowlers, true to current size is fine
  • Youth bowling shoes (sizes 11-3) and junior sizes (3.5-7) are available from most major brands

  • Dexter Kids' Pro Am — entry-level, durable, easy to clean
  • Brunswick Fuze — affordable youth option
  • KR Strikeforce Kids' Flyer — light and flexible

⚙️ Performance Shoe Features

Right-Hand vs. Left-Hand Shoes

Performance bowling shoes have a sliding sole on the non-dominant foot and a traction sole on the push-off foot:

  • Right-handed bowlers: sliding sole on the LEFT shoe
  • Left-handed bowlers: sliding sole on the RIGHT shoe

Make sure to select the correct version at checkout. Most performance shoes have right-hand and left-hand versions sold separately.

Interchangeable Soles

Higher-end performance shoes (Dexter SST 8/9, Storm SP series) come with multiple sole and heel options that can be swapped to adjust slide based on lane conditions.

What's Returnable

  • Unworn shoes with original tags and packaging
  • Shoes tried on indoors (carpeted surface) only
  • No scuff marks on the soles or uppers

What's Not Returnable

  • Shoes worn on a bowling lane or any outdoor surface
  • Shoes with scuff marks or visible wear
  • Custom or personalized footwear

How to Try Them On

  1. Wear the socks you plan to bowl in
  2. Lace them up fully
  3. Walk around on a clean carpeted area
  4. Mimic your bowling stance and slide motion
  5. Check for pinching, slippage, and toe room
