🎯 Why Maintenance Matters

Modern reactive resin bowling balls are designed to absorb lane oil — that's how they create friction and hook potential. But absorbed oil is also the #1 enemy of ball performance:

  • Oil saturation reduces friction and hook potential
  • Surface buildup from oil and lane debris dulls reaction
  • Untreated balls can lose 50%+ of their performance within 100 games
  • Properly maintained balls can last 500+ games while retaining performance

🪣 After Each Session

The single most important habit. Takes 60 seconds.

What You Need

  • Microfiber towel or shammy (no terry cloth — too abrasive)
  • USBC-approved ball cleaner (Storm Reacta-Clean, Hammer Beast Cleaner, Brunswick Snap Back, etc.)

What to Do

  1. Spray cleaner directly onto the ball surface
  2. Wipe in circular motions to lift oil and debris
  3. Pay extra attention to the track area (where the ball rolls)
  4. Wipe dry with a clean section of the towel
  5. Store in your bag or on a ball cup
⚠️ USBC Rule: Cleaning during competition is restricted. Only USBC-approved cleaners may be used between frames. Most heavy cleaning happens after the session ends.

🧴 Weekly Deep Clean

Once a week (or every 5–6 sessions), give your ball a more thorough cleaning:

Recommended Method

  1. Tape over the finger and thumb holes (prevents water/cleaner inside)
  2. Apply a heavier coat of ball cleaner
  3. Let sit for 1–2 minutes to break down oil
  4. Wipe clean with microfiber towel
  5. Inspect surface — if it looks "tracked out" (visible oil rings that won't wipe off), proceed to oil extraction

♨️ Oil Extraction (Monthly)

Reactive resin balls absorb oil that surface cleaning can't reach. Heat-based oil extraction draws absorbed oil out of the coverstock and restores performance.

Option 1: Professional Service

  • Most BowlersMart locations and pro shops offer oil extraction service
  • Uses commercial ball ovens (Innovative Hook-It, Revivor) at controlled temperatures
  • Cost: typically $10–$20 per ball
  • Recommended for valuable or high-end balls

Option 2: At-Home Methods

  • Hot water bath: tape over holes, submerge ball in hot (NOT boiling) water for 20 minutes, towel off oil
  • Dishwasher: NOT recommended — too hot and risks cracking
  • Oven: only use a purpose-built bowling ball oven; household ovens void warranties and risk damage
⚠️ Warning: Heat damage from improper extraction (kitchen ovens, dishwashers, microwaves) is NOT covered under warranty. Stick to commercial ball ovens or hot water baths.

🔧 When to Resurface

Signs You Need a Resurface

  • Ball reaction has noticeably weakened despite cleaning and oil extraction
  • Visible track wear (a "ring" worn into the ball where it rolls)
  • Surface looks dull or shiny when it should be the opposite
  • You've put 60+ games on the ball and want to restore the original surface
  • You want to change the surface to match different lane conditions

What Resurfacing Does

  1. Removes a thin layer of the coverstock to expose fresh material
  2. Restores or changes the surface grit (e.g., 500 → 4000 polish)
  3. Reverses cosmetic track wear
  4. Restores the ball's original hook potential

How Often

  • Tournament/competitive bowlers: every 60–75 games
  • League bowlers: every 100–150 games
  • Recreational bowlers: when reaction noticeably drops

🏠 Proper Storage

Do

  • Store at room temperature (60–75°F)
  • Keep in your bowling bag or on a ball cup
  • Keep dry and out of direct sunlight
  • If using a roller bag, lay flat or upright with no weight on the ball

Don't

  • Leave in a hot car (above 100°F can cause cracking)
  • Leave in a cold trunk in winter (rapid temp changes can crack)
  • Stack balls on top of each other
  • Store next to harsh chemicals or solvents
