⚖️ Weight
Bowling balls range from 6 to 16 pounds (USBC max is 16). Weight affects how the ball performs and how easily you can throw it.
Choosing Weight
- General rule: 10% of your body weight, up to 16 lbs
- Adults: typically 14–16 lbs for men, 11–14 lbs for women
- Youth: 6–10 lbs depending on age and size
- Comfort matters: a slightly lighter ball you can control beats a heavy ball you can't
Weight Tolerances
USBC allows ±1 oz from labeled weight. So a "15 lb" ball may be 14 lbs 15 oz to 15 lbs 1 oz. Manufacturers also use "weight blocks" (the inner core) to precisely tune total ball weight.

⚙️ Core (Symmetric vs Asymmetric)
The core is the weight block inside the ball. Its shape determines how the ball rotates and where it transitions from skid to hook.
Symmetric Cores
- Smooth, predictable motion
- Forgiving — work well for a wider range of release styles
- Good first reactive ball for most bowlers
Asymmetric Cores
- More angular, defined backend reaction
- Higher revving bowlers benefit most
- More reactive to surface adjustments and layout changes
- Identified by an "intermediate differential" spec greater than 0
📐 RG (Radius of Gyration)
RG measures how the ball's mass is distributed from its center.
What RG Tells You
- Low RG (2.46–2.52): mass concentrated near the center → ball revs up quickly, hooks earlier
- Medium RG (2.52–2.55): balanced, all-around motion
- High RG (2.55–2.61): mass distributed toward the cover → ball stores energy, hooks later/sharper
How to Use RG
Low RG balls are good for heavier oil and bowlers who want early ball read. High RG balls work well for medium-light oil where you need the ball to push down the lane before reacting.

What Differential Tells You
- Low differential (0.000–0.020): minimal flare, controlled motion (most plastics, some urethanes)

Flare Explained
"Flare" is how the ball's track pattern shifts as it rolls down the lane. Higher flare exposes fresh, dry coverstock to the lane (better hook); lower flare keeps the ball on the same track (more controlled).
🔀 Intermediate Differential (Asymmetry)
Only present in asymmetric cores. Measures the asymmetry of the core.
- 0.000–0.005: symmetric core (no asymmetry)
- 0.005–0.015: mildly asymmetric, sharper backend than symmetric
- 0.015+: strongly asymmetric, very angular backend reaction
Asymmetric balls require a thoughtful drilling layout to take advantage of the asymmetry — talk to your driller.

The factory-applied surface texture, measured by Abralon grit number. Lower grit = rougher = earlier hook.
